Time Is Love - Josh Turner
I understand where this song is coming from, but (a big one) it is a really irresponsible attitude to have. This song suffers seriously from I GET IT BUT IT’S DUMB. Otherwise, it’s sort of boring but mostly alright. The chorus, which feels like most of the song, is decent if sort of clumsy. That’s about it.
(sometimes it’s really taxing to write like 10 reviews in a row, so sorry that this is kidna half-assed but I really don’t have too much interesting to say about this)
Anonymous asked: you do realize that miranda lambert's over you song is about blake shelton's brother who passed away, not a break up....
No, I didn’t. I’ll re-do it. Thanks.
*edit: just re-read the lyrics. Don’t think that it’s obvious unless you research the song, which I usually do, but didn’t this time. I think that what I said about it is basically still true. It’s still not very interesting and the lyrics at the start are still cliche, maybe even more so? Anyway, I think it’s fair to say that if you are a casual listener of the song, which I was but shouldn’t have been, with a title like “Over You”, and the lyrics of the song, that you wouldn’t get that it’s about someone who died.
Put A Drink In My Hand - Eric Church
I’ll always defend an actually fun party song, and this song is fun enough, but that doesn’t make it good. The downside is that if you aren’t partying to it, it’s almost unbearably stupid, and really demonstrates the difference between fun and good. It’s really difficult to explain why this song doesn’t work, but it doesn’t. It’s probably the undeserved ego that this song oozes, or the repeated words that are all throughout the song. And of course the ego is undeserved, this guy has a shitty job and he isn’t going anywhere any time soon. Ultimately, a good party song is about having fun with friends and meeting new people, and not about dick measuring.
Why Wait - Rascal Flatts
I used to like this band, but man they are so weenie* and safe and boring that I currently can’t stand them at all. They haven’t put out a single in a while that I could confidently say that I like. This is mom music** to the max, which unfortunately also means that it’s pretty bad. Or rather, it’s really safe and boring and weenie. This could be the theme song of what the band is now.
* I’ve really, really tried to think of a better word besides weenie, but I can’t. Guess I’m not that creative.
** Also wish I could say something better than mom music, but again, not that creative. It’s like that “Hey, Soul Sister” sort of garbage that is exactly what Rascal Flatts are now. They are the country Train.
Over You - Miranda Lambert
One of my two big criticisms of this song is that it just isn’t all that interesting. The second is the whole December/cold thing at the start, which doesn’t help the not very interesting part, is pretty cliche. Still, I actually like this song more than I like most of Lamber’s stuff. WHICH, I want to stress, is not the same as them being bad, they just aren’t really my thing. Still, I think the chorus rescues the verses a bit, maybe just because Lambert brings her passion and rebellious nature to it.
I’m Gonna Love You Through It - Martina McBride
I can’t really endlessly praise this song, but I think that it handles a difficult subject well enough. It’s obviously supposed to be “moving” and “inspirational” and I guess that’s what I dislike about it, that it’s tailored to be moving, but whatever. It’s not a deal-breaker to me. I don’t really have a whole lot to say about this song, except that it’s pretty good, it’s not my thing, and it’s not really as emotionally manipulative as it could have been. I don’t think it comes from a disingenuous place on McBride’s part, and it works.
Somethin’ ‘bout A Truck - Kip Moore
This song is a lot of wasted potential. I don’t like to review songs for what they aren’t instead of what they are, but really, it would be a great title for a commentary on the state of modern country music. Instead it’s a strictly formula cliche love song, that devolves into this “Hole in the Bottom of the Sea” chorus that I really dislike. Yawn.
Home - Dierks Bentley
There are a lot of things that I like about this song. It sounds grand and large, and even though the subject has been done to death (patriotism) it isn’t overly politicized. Then again, I’m not really a patriotic person, so I can’t really get into this song. Also, at first, I thought it was little more interesting than it turned out to be, because it isn’t about a lost individual but rather about the way the country is kind of lost and doesn’t know where it’s going. It’s a (very?) good song, but I can’t really empathize with it all that much.
I’m not way happy with this review - will update soon.
Just Fishin’ - Trace Adkins
I kind of wish Adkins was more popular, because even if he doesn’t put out good songs they are at least inoffensive and fun, or sweet, or cute, or something. That’s basically what this song is, an unoffensive, not that great, but sweet and cute song about spending quality time with your children. It is painfully average in a lot of ways, but rescued mostly by the fact that the subject matter isn’t totally tired. I really kind of wanted to rag on this song, but I can’t really find a good reason to honestly hate it. Like it or leave it, odds are you’ll forget it in a year.
Decoration Day - The Drive-by Truckers
This song is very good. It’s thoughtful and has something interesting to say. It gives you things to think about. It’s well written. There needs to be more of this on the radio.
